Trees are useful to man in three important ways: they provide him with wood and other products; they give him shade; and they help to prevent droughts and floods. Unfortunately, in many parts of the world, man has not realized that the third of these services is the most important. In his eagerness to make money from trees, he has cut them down in large numbers, only to find that without them he has lost the best friends he had. And besides, he is usually too careless to plant and look after new trees. So the forests slowly disappear. This does not only mean that man will have fewer trees. The results are even more serious: for where there are trees, their roots break up soil --- allowing the rain to sink in --- and also bind the soil, thus preventing it from being washed away easily; but where there are no trees, the rain falls on hard ground and flows away, causing floods and carrying away the rich top-soil. When all the top-soil is gone, nothing remains but worthless desert. Two thousand years ago a rich and powerful country cut down its trees to build warships, with which to gain itself an empire. It set up the empire but, without its trees, its soil became poor and it grew weak. When the empire fell to pieces, the home country found itself faced with floods and starvation.1. What is the most important service of trees to man according to the passage? A. They help him make money. B. They give him wood and other products. C. They help him prevent droughts and floods. D. They give him shade.2. Why do forests in many parts of the world slowly disappear? A. New trees are not looked after properly. B. Many trees have been cut down by man. C. Man has not paid enough attention to planting trees. D. All of the above. 3. Why did the country mentioned in the passage suffer from floods and starvation? A. Because an empire was set up. B. Because the empire fell to pieces. C. Because it lost all its trees. D. Because too much had been spent on wars.4. Why does land become desert after all trees are cut down? A. Because nothing remains on land except floods. B. Because there are no longer trees to keep the rain and protect the top-soil. C. Because too much rain sinks in and washes away the top-soil. D. Because roots of the trees break up the soil.5. What does the author tell us in this passage? A. How trees help prevent droughts and floods. B. The relationship between trees and man. C. How an empire fell to pieces in ancient times. D. A story of trees.【答案】 1.C 2.D 3.C 4.B 5.A

如and,well,however,therefore… 比如說發(fā)生了一起意外事件,我們通常用“have an accident ”來表示,不要錯誤的使用“have an incident”。 3、注意不同語言的表達習慣,也是寫好英語作文的重要環(huán)節(jié),如“我的理想是做一名歌手”,很多同學寫成“my ambition is to do/make a singer,” “to do”表示“做”或者“干”,“to make”表示“制作”,而“做一名歌手”則表示“成為一名歌手”應該用“be/become a singer”;又如“看書、看報”應用“read a book/newspaper”,而不是“see a book/newspaper”。
(1) Jane got home late at night. She was going to knock at the door. Just then it opened. Her father was standing by the door. He was a tall man with white hair. “Come in,” he said. “I am getting cold.” Jane went in. Her mother was waiting in the room. Her mother was a short woman in her early forties. She was wearing a nightdress(睡衣). Her father closed the door. “Well,” he said, “Where have you been? You promised to be home at eleven oclock. Its one oclock now.” “Its only ten to one.” “That doesnt make any difference,” her father replied angrily. “Weve been very worried about you,” said her mother. “Im sorry,” Jane said. “I was at a dance. I didnt notice the time.” “Youve got a watch,” said her father. “Your mother and I have waited for a long time. We didnt know where you were.” “I can look after myself,” replied Jane. “Im not a baby any more.” 1. Who opened the door? A. Janes mother. B. Janes father. C. Jane herself. D. The door itself. 2. When Jane got home, her parents _______. A. were in bed B. turned on the light C. were waiting for her D. did not get up 3. Jane promised to be home at eleven, _______. A. but she was nearly two hours late B. and she came back before dark C. but she stayed out the whole night D. and she returned on time 4. Why did Jane get home late? A. She had to walk a long way. Jane refused to apologize, so her parents were angry. C. Jane thought she was old enough to take care of herself. D. Janes mother was as tall as her father. 3. A。 (2) Many teenagers(青少年) feel that the most important people in their lives are their friends. They believe that their family members, and in particular(尤其是) their parents, dont know them as well as their friends do. In large families, it is quite often for brothers and sisters to fight with each other and then they can only go to their friends for advice. It is very important for teenagers to have one good friend or a circle of friends. Even when they are not with their friends, they usually spend a lot of time talking among themselves on the phone. This communication(交際) is very important in childrens growing up, because friends can discuss something difficult to say to their family members. However, parents often try to choose their childrens friends for them. Some parents may even stop their children from meeting their good friends. The question of “choice” is an interesting one. Have you ever thought of the following questions? Who chooses your friends? Do you choose your friends or your friends choose you? Have you got a good friend your parents dont like? Your answers are welcome. 1. Many teenagers think their _______ know them better than their parents do. A. friends B. parents C. brothers and sisters D. family members 2. When teenagers stay alone, the usual way of communication is _______. A. to go to their friends B. to talk with their parents C. to have a discussion with their family by phone D. to talk with their friends on the phone 3. Which of the following is different in meaning from the sentence “Some parents may even stop their children from meeting their good friends”? A. Some parents may even not allow their children to meet their good friends. B. Some parents may even ask their children to stay away from their good friends. C. Some parents may not even let their children meet their good friends. D. Some parents may want their children to stop to meet their good friends. 4. Which of the following sentences is right according to the passage? A. Parents should like everything their children enjoy. B. In all families children can choose everything they like. C. Parents should try their best to understand their children better. D. Teenagers can only go to their friends for help. 5. The sentence “Your answers are welcome.” Means _______. A. You are welcome to have a discussion with us. B. Weve got no idea, so your answers are welcome. C. Your answers are always correct. D. You can give us all the right answers.
